MODALS

THEME:  MODALS

OBJECTIVE

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to express advice or suggestions using modals.

INICIO (WARM UP)Read the situations quickly and match them with the pictures. What are the teens doing?

 1. Two people from my class always make fun of me because I always wear a cycle helmet when I’m cycling to school. The roads are quite busy so I think it’s safer to always wear a helmet. I want to be safe, but they say it looks stupid. Normally I don’t care what they say, but sometimes it hurts when they are mean.
Rachel, 14  ______________

2.   I have a group of five really good friends. But my friend Diana is really annoying. She always criticizes one of us – what we wear, what we say, what we’re having for lunch – everything. Sometimes I talk to her about it, and she always apologizes, but then she starts doing it again.
Aleja 15 ________________

3.  I usually hang around with my friends Max and Larry at break – we all love basketball. But now they smoke. They have a group of new friends who go to get cigarettes at break and smoke them behind the gym. We hardly ever play basketball now, and I feel like I’m losing my friends. Maybe I should start smoking too?

MUST

COULD

SHOULD

It is used for obligation.

The term "must" can be used to define the necessity "the need of the hour", which necessarily has to be executed.

Must is a helping verb. It can be used to show obligation or compulsion in the sentences. We use the term "must" to express anything that is essential or necessary in a specific situation. The term "must" emphasizes the need or importance of something.

Negative form: MUSTN´T

We use could to show that something is possible, but not certain:

They could come by car. (= Maybe they will come by car.)
They could be at home. (= Maybe they are at home.)

 Negative form: COULDN´T

We use SHOULD to suggest something.

The modal SHOULD expresses opinion, one person´s point of view.

We often use the term "should" to discuss duties, obligations and if something is right. We can also use it to do anything in a specific situation, specifically if judging someone's activities.

 We should protect our environment.

We should use reusable bags when shopping.

 Negative form: SHOULDN´T

Read the text about living in Colombia. Do you agree with everything that the author says?

LIVING IN COLOMBIA

Have you recently moved to Colombia? Some things will be new and strange for you. But don’t worry – I’m sure you’re going to have a fantastic time in our country. Let me tell you about living in Colombia. One of the most incredible things about living in Colombia is its people. You will feel the warmth of Colombians – you must be prepared to receive lots of kisses and hugs! Colombians are also very friendly and sociable. There are a lot of colorful festivals to enjoy throughout the year. Colombians are famous for dancing – you should definitely try Salsa or Cumbia if you can. Or watch other people doing it! Colombians are caring people, and they always give up their seats on a bus to elderly people or pregnant women. You mustn’t forget to do this, or people might think that you are selfish. Colombia has 59 beautiful National Natural Parks, so you don’t have to go into the Amazon jungle to see some amazing wildlife. Finally, if you want your family and friends to come and visit you, people from most countries don’t have to get a visa. Colombia is open to visitors from all over the world. However, everyone who enters the country must have a valid passport.
